Post-Graduate MFA Thesis Exhibitions, Class of 2020 - Caleb Engstrom

The Face of Another

I am now more than ever, inside.
How much of this is affecting them? They seem like themselves enough, I hope that I seem like ‘myself’ enough.

Through the use of masks, corporeal mime, and the mythological god Hermanubis, The Face of Another, explores the artist's role as a father and how this role compels one to conceal parts of oneself while revealing others.

Post-Graduate MFA Thesis Exhibitions, Class of 2020

During spring quarter 2020, the MFA thesis exhibitions for the cohort of 2020 were set to open on April 4th at the University Art Galleries but were abruptly cancelled due to the pandemic. As a result, the galleries have since been closed to the public. As restrictions begin to loosen, we are carefully preparing to mount exhibitions once again. During the fall quarter, the UAG will present the Post-Graduate MFA Thesis Exhibitions, Class of 2020. Due to safety measures and regulations, the UAG will continue to operate remotely until further notice.

Jessica Chastain

The latest in the UAG’s Emerging Artist Series presents three filmic works by Maura Brewer, produced between 2014 and 2016. Each work takes as its site a recent film by the actress Jessica Chastain, starting with Zero Dark Thirty in 2012, followed by Interstellar in 2014 and the ending with the 2015 film The Martian. In all three films, Chastain plays a similar character: a high-achieving career woman who is dedicated to the pursuit of a non-romantic male counterpart, from Osama Bin Laden to Mark Watney (Matt Damon).

Aztlán to Magulandia: The Journey of Chicano Artist Gilbert "Magu" Luján

UC Irvine’s University Art Galleries (UAG) will present the first survey of one of the most iconic figures of the Chicano art movement, Gilbert “Magu” Luján (1940–2011) and an accompanying publication. One of the founding members of the Chicano artists collective Los Four, Luján is known for his coloration and visual explorations of Chicano culture and community that drew upon and brought to life various historic and contemporary visual sources with startling results: Pyramid-mounted low riders driven by anthropomorphic dogs traversing a newly defined and mythologized L.A.

Paradox in Language: What I look at is never what I wish to see

The University Art Gallery is pleased to present Paradox in Language: What I look at is never what I wish to see, a group exhibition featuring the work of Charles Gaines, Benjamin Verhoeven and Erika Vogt. This exhibition investigates the influences of various strains of conceptual thought that began to take shape in 1966 when the writings of Jacques Lacan and Roland Barthes became increasingly important to the study of linguistic systems.
