An Epitaph: My Dreams are Getting Better All the Time
This exhibition of six second-year M.F.A. students presents works for their advancement to candidacy at the Claire Trevor School of Arts at University of California, Irvine.
Artists: Gwyneth Bulawsky, David Ditman, Teresa Ho, Simon Klein, Jacob Lenc, and Yuzhe Zhang
Gwyneth Bulawsky is from San Francisco, CA. Currently, she is an MFA candidate at the University of California, Irvine and has a BA from UCLA. Recent exhibitions include The Warmth of the Day Leaves Shadows on the Ground at Gattopardo and The MFA’s of La at Goodmother Gallery. Gwyneth was also selected for the 19th Annual Greater Los Angeles Juried MFA Exhibition. Her paintings are about the inclusion and representation of transgender women within an art historical context. These works showcase trans figures in romantic landscapes using the drama of the sublime as a tension of the othered and our exclusion to salvation. She pays homage to queer art that has been destroyed by religious groups from the past while actively fighting against current censorship of queerness in today's political climate. Gwyneth Bulawsky’s art is a reflection of her own transition. She reveals the complexities of her trans experience, of both the willing and unwilling objectification of her own body. She creates paintings that celebrate trans feminine bodies while simultaneously showing the frustration of her experience navigating through a heteronormative society.
David Ditman lives in Los Angeles. He likes to chase after ideas; take things apart and make things up. David describes his work as a “coherence of contradictions and a display of the mess he’s made”. Instability and disruption invigorate him because of what may be learned, revealed, or imagined. Warning: Proceed with caution. Some assembly required.
