In this catalogue Melinda Wortz, the curator for this show, describes a lecture by Henry Gledzahler at Yale University: “There are two prerequisites for having any sense of what is of value and quality in your own time.  The first is a grasp of the history of art.  The other prerequisite you must have in order to come to terms with contemporary art is a thorough sense of who you are in your own time.”  Using many different themes and motifs from early 20th century in his work, it would seem Hurbert is grappling with these issues himself.
