The five Los Angeles sculptors featured in this exhibition exhibit a number of qualities in common with one another although they do not share any group affiliation. Most noticeably, in each artist's work there is a purposeful suppression of autobiographic incident (the record of an artist's hand, etc.). Each sculptor relies on simple, essential forms, such as Larry Bell's cube, or John McCracken's pyramid. At first glance this may come across as unoriginal and mass-produced, but upon further examination the simple forms are as characteristic as "a brushstroke of de Kooning's."
